In the past, knitting linked local communities together; specific patterns existed in specific place's. Now knitting links global communities through the Internet. I am fascinated by how something as simple as a ball of wool and two needles can cross ages, continents and cultures and bring people together.

With this project, I wanted to bring knitting back to its basics, of sharing knowledge of how to knit with others. I wanted to create local links between the people in Tameside through knitting.

I began researching the history of Tameside how the canals had linked the country together in the past. The canals are an integral part of Tamsides's heritage; three major canals converge in Ashton, I wanted to celebrate this whilst sharing my love for knitting.

I asked people to knit one stitch per year of their lives and with their help I have recreated a knitted map of the canals that run through Tameside, of the histories of people living in Tameside.

Those who could knit have excelled themselves and those who couldn't, have dedicated their time to learn. I have met wonderful people each one unique. I feel the piece communicates the talent and uniqueness of each individual and celebrates the strong active community of Tameside. This could not have happened with out you. Thank you all.
